Hi Pernilla, I come from outside Sweden (actually a third world country) and where I come from all pregnant women should get (obligatory) the following tests if they exceed the age of 30: Spina bifida, Edward Syndrome, and Down Syndrome. Since i am 34, I was told that in Sweden I am not entitled to any of these tests because I am under 35. My question is: why does not the health care system in Sweden take into account that some people are from different backgrounds and thus age differently? (I am 34 but considering what my body and brain went through in my difficult life I might be "physically" at the age of 40). Can I tell my barnmoska about these rules in my home country and request such tests? I look forward to hearing from you.

Hej Ann, in general women over the age of 33 or 35 (it differs in different counties in Sweden) are offered extra tests. Otherwise it is not possible to have these tests if you do not have strong reasons for it. That means if you have given birth to a child having these syndroms or you have a heriditary factor to consider. Eventhou it is a very good idea for you to discuss this with your midwife so that she is aware of your history, especially if you have given birht before under difficult situation.
The best of luck, Pernilla
